“You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” – Erma Bombeck
In recent week, we have given you plenty of pink and festive suggestions for your Independence Day parties! If that doesn’t satisfy you, don’t forget that we carry a selection of gourmet sodas, cheese, charcuterie, chips, crackers, and more for your picnic or party. So, don’t forget to follow Julia Child’s suggestions for the best potato salad, to apply plenty of sunscreen & bug spray, and to stay safe around fireworks. If you are heading to Long Bridge Park, just a few blocks from the Shop to enjoy the National Mall fireworks tomorrow, here’s the basics:
- Celebration is from 5-10 pm and is free and open to the public.
- There are free activities, including lawn games, face painting, and live music.
- Free shuttles will be running from the Crystal City and Pentagon City metro stations.
- Note that bags, backpacks, and other hand carried items are subject to search and that alcoholic beverages are not allowed on County and federal parkland during Independence Day events.
There are plenty of other places close to the Shop in Arlington that are great to watch the National Fireworks! Here is a list from the County of some with public access. We are going to be open regular hours today and tomorrow, 11 am to 8 pm, to help you with your July 4th celebration needs!
