In 1984, Giorgio Colutta announced to his father that he did not want to follow the family career path of being a pharmacist. Instead, Giorgio decided to take the 18 hectare family estate and create an eponymous winery. Located in the heart of Colli Orientali, one of the two most important DOCs in Italy for Pinot Grigio, the focus at Colutta is on making extremely high quality wines that show typicity of the varietal and the character of the land. Just north of the Adriatic Sea and mere miles from Slovenia, this region has had more influence from mainland Europe over the centuries than most of the Italian peninsula. At high elevation, but without being surrounded by the mountains that create a natural boundary for the rest of Italy, Friuli has always been seen as an area well suited for both indigenous (aka Pinot Grigio and Ribolla Gialla) and “international” (aka Bordeaux) varietals. The winery itself focuses on low intervention in the vineyards and minimizing environmental impact in the winery. Colutta is making the sort of mineral-rich, aromatic whites and lean, complex reds emblematic of wine from the eastern hills of Friuli.
