In 1980 Bassett and Marcella Brown purchased an abandoned ranch in the Napa Valley. They painstakingly restored the home on the property and, being in Napa and all, planted some grapes. For a long time they sold their grapes to local winemakers– until 1995, that is– when the “kids,” Deneen, David, and Coral, decided to make their own wines from the family’s grapes. Over 20 years later, Brown Estate is one of the most well-respected wineries in Napa, and one of only a very few African American owned-and-operated wineries in the Napa Valley, and in the U.S. more broadly.
“House of Brown” is Brown Estate’s new line with a focus on affordability, but with the winemaking expertise of the Estate wines. Their California Chardonnay is killer for the money: look for notes of tropical fruits, elderflowers, caramel, marcona almonds.
Barrel-fermented in French Oak, 30% of which was new.
